Diagnostics

Diagnostics usually refers to the connection of a computer to your car via an OBD port to give an indication as to where a fault has occurred in the electronic systems.

Most cars since the 1990,s have their systems controlled by an Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Engine control module (ECM)and many modern cars also have other units controlling specific functions such as brakes, traction control and vehicle stability systems.

Al the electronic systems are designed to make your car run efficiently and to inform you when a fault occurs. When a fault is detected the management system illuminates a light on the dashboard and if the car considers the fault to be serious it cuts the engine power and can restrict the speed and power of the car ( Limp Mode).

The reason for the fault is stored in the ECU or ECM and when interrogated by compatible equipment it gives a code and information that will allow a technician to investigate the problem.

A common misconception is that diagnostic machines will turn off the warning light and fix the fault but this is not the case. When the fault is diagnosed the computer will give factual information as to why the light on the dashboard has been triggered, it does not give information about which specific part is at fault.

The technician has to use this information to conduct further tests to identify exactly what the problem is.

We are happy to provide diagnostic services using Autel or Snap On technology and rather than just give you a print out of the results we are happy to discuss the results with you. Please see our prices page for further information
